As a result of the 2010 Marriage Preparation Survey, the Bishops' Committee for Marriage & Family Life are hosting a national conference on November 4-5, 2011 for all marriage preparation providers across England and Wales.

Facilitating a Journey of Grace and Growth:

Preparing Couples To Be A Sign of God’s Love for All

The conference will take place at the Barceló Hinckley Island Hotel, Leicestershire, between 5.30pm on Friday, 4th November until 5.30pm on Saturday, 5th November. Day delegates are welcome to attend at a reduced rate from 9.00 am on the Saturday.

Aims

The conference has a number of aims:

  • To address the expressed desire of marriage preparation survey participants to meet others and pick up fresh ideas and resources;  

  • To work towards sharing effective practices in marriage preparation, in terms of delivery, content and evaluation methods;  

  • To discuss and clarify specific issues suggested by the survey findings – recruiting and training volunteers, ensuring continuing professional development etc;

  • To thank all those involved in this critical work and  affirm their role in the life and mission of the Church

Outline

The conference will take place in the presence of Rt Rev John Hine, Chair of the Bishops' Committee for Marriage & Family Life and will include:

  • A keynote presentation

  • A conference dinner

  • Presentation of survey findings

  • Consultation with providers on key issues arising

  • Workshops on a variety of marriage preparation programmes

  • Workshops on a variety of marriage preparation practices (practitioner led)

  • Mass of Thanksgiving for all those involved in marriage preparation

  • Space for exhibits & posters

The Conference is being planned by a small working party convened by the Committee for Marriage & Family Life, comprising staff, volunteers & members of CBCEW, FAMILIAS, Engaged Encounter and Marriage Care as well as an academic and a canon lawyer.
